Associative storage and retrieval processes in person memory.

    Summary

Recalling information about people is best when it contradicts initial impressions. This study proposes a general theory of person memory, supported by seven experiments, explaining how we store and retrieve social information.

    Area of Science:

    • Cognitive Psychology
    • Social Psychology
    • Memory Studies

    Background:

    • Understanding person memory is crucial for social cognition.
    • Existing theories often lack a comprehensive framework for associative storage and retrieval.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and validate a general associative storage and retrieval theory of person memory.
    • To investigate how memory for behavioral information is influenced by congruence with prior impressions.

    Main Methods:

    • Seven experiments were conducted to test the proposed theory.
    • Participants recalled behavioral information categorized as congruent, incongruent, or irrelevant to an initial impression.
    • Data analysis focused on recall accuracy, order, and interresponse times.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Incongruent information was best recalled; irrelevant information was recalled poorest.
    • Individual differences in recall patterns were observed and aligned with the nomothetic model.
    • Congruent items' recall probability increased with incongruent items, while irrelevant items were unaffected.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed theory accurately predicts recall patterns for person memory.
    • Findings have implications for understanding social judgment and memory retrieval processes.
    • The model applies to both data-driven and conceptually driven cognitive processes.
