Area of Science:

  • Psychology
  • Spiritual Health
  • Pediatric Health

Background:

  • Spiritual struggles (SSs) are distressing thoughts linked to negative health outcomes.
  • Parents of children with chronic illnesses often face unique spiritual challenges.
  • Existing interventions for SSs in this population are limited.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility, acceptability, and fidelity of a novel intervention designed to reduce SSs in parents of children with cystic fibrosis (CF).
  • To explore the preliminary efficacy of the intervention in decreasing SSs.

Main Methods:

  • A randomized controlled trial design was employed.
  • Parents screening positive for SSs were randomized to either the intervention or an attention-control group.
  • The intervention targeted intra-, inter-, and divine spiritual struggles.

Main Results:

  • A total of 23 participants were analyzed.
  • All participants demonstrated a reduction in SSs.
  • The intervention group reported higher feasibility compared to the control group.
  • Acceptability of the intervention was high among participants.

Conclusions:

  • The GuideSS_CF intervention is both acceptable and feasible for parents of children with CF.
  • The intervention shows promise as a potentially efficacious approach to reduce spiritual struggles in this population.
  • Further development and larger trials are warranted to confirm efficacy.
