    Area of Science:

    • Dentistry
    • Pediatric Dentistry
    • Restorative Dentistry

    Background:

    • Traditional cavity preparation often involves extending the preparation to "prevent" future decay.
    • This approach can lead to the removal of healthy tooth structure.
    • Minimally invasive techniques aim to preserve more natural tooth tissue.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the success of conservative cavity preparation utilizing sealing for caries prevention.
    • To compare this technique against traditional cavity extension for prevention.
    • To assess the longevity and retention of sealants in conservative preparations.

    Main Methods:

    • A total of 332 conservative restorations were placed in 240 teeth among 110 children (aged 6-14).
    • Restorations were assessed after a 4-year follow-up period.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Data collected included caries incidence and sealant integrity (retention, wear, and loss).
  • Main Results:

    • Out of 205 restorations examined after 4 years, 13 teeth showed new caries.
    • Sealant wear was noted in 14 restorations.
    • Complete sealant loss occurred in 8 restorations, partial loss in 38, with 156 showing complete retention.

    Conclusions:

    • Conservative cavity preparation with sealing for prevention is a successful and viable dental treatment.
    • The technique effectively conserves valuable tooth structure.
    • Preliminary findings support this minimally invasive approach in pediatric patients.
