Postmeningococcal urethritis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis: a case report.

J C Lefevre, H Jouas, M A Bertrand

    Sexually Transmitted Diseases
    |April 1, 1985

    Summary

A case of meningococcal urethritis treated with spectinomycin was followed by chlamydial urethritis. Accurate laboratory diagnosis is crucial for differentiating Neisseria species and identifying Chlamydia trachomatis.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Microbiology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Urethritis is a common condition with various causative agents.
    • Neisseria meningitidis and Chlamydia trachomatis are known causes of urethritis.

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with meningococcal urethritis.
    • The patient was treated with spectinomycin.

    Findings:

    • Following treatment, the patient developed urethritis caused by Chlamydia trachomatis.
    • This suggests a potential role for treatment in altering the microbial landscape or unmasking a co-infection.

    Implications:

    • Highlights the importance of accurate species differentiation for Neisseria in urethritis cases.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Emphasizes the need for direct microbiologic diagnosis to confirm chlamydial infections.
  • Suggests considering co-infections or sequential infections in persistent or recurrent urethritis.
