Aneurysmal bone cyst: a hybrid lesion?

P D Robinson

The British Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
    |June 1, 1985
    PubMed
    Summary

A rare case of aneurysmal bone cyst in the maxilla developed after cementifying fibroma removal. This finding supports theories on the pathogenesis of aneurysmal bone cysts, especially in hybrid lesions.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
    • Pathology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are rare, benign, expansile bone lesions.
    • They can occur centrally or peripherally in the jaws.
    • ABCs are often associated with other osseous lesions.

    Observation:

    • This report details a unique case of an aneurysmal bone cyst in the maxilla.
    • The cyst developed subsequent to the surgical excision of a cementifying fibroma.
    • This represents a rare instance of a 'hybrid' lesion.

    Findings:

    • Literature review identified 58 cases of jaw ABCs, with 13 associated with other bone diseases.
    • The occurrence of an ABC following cementifying fibroma excision provides evidence for specific pathogenetic mechanisms.
    • This case supports the theory that ABCs may arise secondary to other bone pathologies.

    Implications:

    • Understanding the association between ABCs and other lesions is crucial for diagnosis and treatment.
    • This case highlights the importance of considering secondary development of ABCs.
    • Further research into the pathogenesis of these hybrid lesions is warranted.
