    Major depressive disorder patients show altered REM sleep patterns, including shortened REM latency and increased REM activity, compared to those in remission or with minor depressive disorder. These sleep variables can help classify depression severity.

    Background:

    • Depression is a mood disorder affecting millions globally.
    • Sleep disturbances are common in patients with affective disorders.
    • Specific sleep parameters may differentiate depression subtypes and severity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate sleep polygraphic differences between major depressive disorder (MDD) and minor depressive disorder (mDD).
    • To assess sleep alterations in MDD patients currently experiencing depressive symptoms versus those in remission.
    • To determine if sleep variables can aid in classifying depressive disorder subtypes.

    Main Methods:

    • Conducted 3-night sleep polygraphic recordings in 43 inpatients with affective disorders.
    • Classified patients into MDD (n=36) and mDD (n=7) based on Research Diagnostic Criteria.
