University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library developed criteria to evaluate and catalog historical medical books. This ensures discoverability and preservation of valuable historical medical literature.
Area of Science:
- Library Science
- Medical History
- Archival Studies
Background:
- A large collection of historical medical books, previously weeded from the general collection, required evaluation for retention or discard.
- The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center initiated a project to manage this collection.
Observation:
- A literature search identified best practices for evaluating, cataloging, and processing historical library materials.
- These practices were adapted for the specific needs of the historical medical book collection.
Findings:
- A set of evaluation criteria was developed to determine the disposition of each book.
- Eight hundred sixty-two titles were selected for inclusion in the library catalog.
- Established cataloging and processing procedures were implemented for selected materials.
Implications:
- The historical medical book collection is now discoverable in the library catalog, facilitating historical research.
- Materials have been processed for efficient retrieval and long-term preservation.
- This project provides a model for managing similar historical collections in academic health sciences libraries.
