This study found that individuals with early memory decline who had higher education, more depressive symptoms, and better baseline functioning were more likely to stick with behavioral interventions. Adherence to these dementia-delaying strategies is linked to daily function.
Area of Science:
- Gerontology and Cognitive Neurology
- Behavioral Science and Public Health
Background:
- Behavioral interventions show promise in delaying dementia onset during early memory decline.
- Understanding adherence to these interventions is crucial for their long-term effectiveness.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess post-intervention adherence in a multimodal behavioral intervention for amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI).
- To identify predictors of adherence to these interventions over 18 months.
Main Methods:
- 272 participants with aMCI (mean age 75) received a 10-day, 4-hour/day multimodal intervention (yoga, memory, cognitive, support, wellness).
- Adherence was measured at 6, 12, and 18 months post-intervention.
- Statistical analysis identified factors associated with adherence.
Main Results:
- 89% of participants showed partial adherence to at least one component at all follow-ups.
- Physical activity was the most adhered-to component; group support was the least.
- Higher education, baseline depressive symptoms, global cognition, and functional abilities predicted adherence.
Conclusions:
- Adherence to behavioral interventions in aMCI is associated with specific baseline characteristics and concurrent daily function.
- Findings suggest that individuals with higher education and depressive symptoms, and better baseline functioning, are more likely to adhere.
- Functional abilities changes correlate with disease progression and intervention adherence.
