Summary

The Jacki Jacket (JJ) did not reduce post-operative pain for breast cancer patients after mastectomy with reconstruction (TM+R). However, JJ use significantly improved body image scores, suggesting its potential benefit in post-operative care.

Background:

  • Limited high-quality data exists on the effectiveness of post-operative garments for pain management.
  • The Jacki Jacket (JJ) is a novel garment designed with drain receptacle pockets.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of the Jacki Jacket (JJ) on post-discharge pain and quality of life (QOL) in breast cancer patients undergoing TM+R.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of a specialized garment in managing post-operative symptoms.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective randomized trial was conducted with 139 breast cancer patients undergoing TM+R.
  • Participants were randomized to receive either the Jacki Jacket (JJ) or usual care (UC).
  • Pain intensity and QOL were assessed at multiple time points, including post-operative day 1, daily post-discharge, and upon drain removal.
