Dissection complicating angioplasty.

G A Gardiner, M F Meyerovitz, D P Harrington

    AJR. American Journal of Roentgenology
    |September 1, 1985

    Summary

Extensive arterial dissection after percutaneous transluminal angioplasty can resolve spontaneously. Conservative management is recommended for this angioplasty complication, avoiding surgery.

    Area of Science:

    • Interventional Cardiology
    • Vascular Medicine
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) is a common procedure for treating arterial stenosis.
    • Arterial dissection is a known complication of PTA, potentially leading to significant obstruction.

    Observation:

    • Three patients experienced extensive arterial dissection post-PTA, causing severe obstruction or occlusion.
    • The PTA procedures themselves were technically uncomplicated.

    Findings:

    • Arteriographic follow-up at 4-8 months revealed complete resolution of the dissections.
    • No surgical intervention was required for any of the patients.

    Implications:

    • Conservative management may be a viable strategy for managing post-PTA arterial dissection.
