Background:

  • Today's medical students prefer teamwork, continuous feedback, and structured learning, leading to the adoption of Team-based Learning (TBL).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To qualitatively explore student and teacher experiences with Team-based Learning (TBL) in a graduate entry medical program.
  • To understand how TBL, framed by communities of practice, impacts learning and engagement.

Main Methods:

  • Convenience sampling of 169 Year 1 medical students who participated in three TBL sessions.
  • Focus groups with 34 students and interviews with 9 facilitators (3 interviewed) were conducted.
  • A coding framework, informed by communities of practice, was used to analyze qualitative data.

Main Results:

  • TBL structure promoted student accountability for learning and team contributions.
  • Facilitator expertise and immediate feedback enhanced independent and collaborative group work.
  • Facilitators reported rewarding experiences working with peers.

Conclusions:

  • TBL created an enriching learning environment, motivating students to apply knowledge.
  • Senior clinician facilitators enhanced student engagement through expert knowledge sharing.
  • Curriculum changes incorporating TBL aid in preparing medical students for complex healthcare systems.
