Regulation of Angiogenesis and Blood Supply01:24

Regulation of Angiogenesis and Blood Supply

3.3K
Rapidly dividing tumors, embryos, and wounded tissues require more oxygen than usual, lowering the oxygen concentration in the blood. At low oxygen or hypoxic conditions, an oxygen-sensitive transcription factor called the hypoxia-inducible factor 1 or HIF1 is activated. HIF1 is a dimeric protein of alpha (ɑ) and beta (β) subunits.  Under optimal oxygen conditions, HIF1β is present in the nucleus while HIF1ɑ remains in the cytosol. HIF1ɑ is hydroxylated by prolyl...

Papillary Dermis01:11

Papillary Dermis

Dermis
The dermis might be considered the "core" of the integumentary system, as distinct from the epidermis and hypodermis. It contains blood and lymph vessels, nerves, and other structures, such as hair follicles and sweat glands. The dermis is made of two layers of connective tissue that comprise an interconnected mesh of elastin and collagenous fibers, produced by fibroblasts.
Papillary Layer
The papillary layer is made of loose, areolar connective tissue, which means the collagen...

Venous Thrombosis II: Clinical Manifestations and Diagnostic Studies

256
The key difference between Superficial Vein Thrombosis (SVT) and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) lies in their location and severity.Clinical ManifestationsSVT typically presents with localized pain, tenderness, and redness along the course of a superficial vein, often accompanied by a palpable, cord-like structure under the skin. This condition is usually less dangerous than DVT but can be uncomfortable and may lead to complications such as cellulitis or, rarely, a clot extension into the deep...

Mechanism of Angiogenesis01:10

Mechanism of Angiogenesis

6.6K
Blood vessel formation starts early during embryonic development, around day 7. In the extraembryonic yolk sac, mesodermal precursor cells called hemangioblast proliferate and differentiate into angioblast. Angioblasts express vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 or VEGFR2, which binds VEGF-A, a proangiogenic factor, guiding blood vessel formation. VEGF signaling promotes angioblasts to form a blood island in the developing embryo. Angioblasts further differentiate, giving rise to...

Summary

A rare cavernous hemangioma of the extensor tendon sheath caused wrist pain and swelling in a 30-year-old woman. Diagnosis was confirmed via biopsy after a two-year presentation.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedic Surgery
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Tendon sheath tumors are uncommon, with hemangiomas being a rare subtype.
  • Slow-growing nature often leads to delayed diagnosis of these lesions.

Observation:

  • A 30-year-old female presented with a two-year history of wrist pain and swelling.
  • Clinical presentation mimicked more common wrist pathologies.

Findings:

  • Imaging and subsequent biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma.
  • The tumor was located within the extensor tendon sheath of the wrist.

Implications:

  • Highlights the importance of considering rare soft tissue tumors in the differential diagnosis of persistent wrist pain.
