Summary

Regular exercise significantly reduces smartphone addiction symptoms, including withdrawal and mood changes. Longer exercise programs (≥12 weeks) and closed motor skill activities show the greatest benefits for addiction recovery.

Background:

  • Smartphone addiction is a growing public health concern.
  • Exercise is a cost-effective intervention for managing smartphone addiction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and meta-analyze the rehabilitative effects of exercise interventions on smartphone addiction.

Main Methods:

  • Searched multiple databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, CNKI, Wanfang) up to September 2019.
  • Included nine randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and assessed methodological quality using the PEDro scale.

Main Results:

  • Exercise interventions significantly reduced overall smartphone addiction scores (SMD = -1.30) and subscales (withdrawal, highlight behavior, social comfort, mood change).
  • Individuals with severe addiction and those participating in longer exercise programs (≥12 weeks) or closed motor skill exercises showed greater improvements.
  • Specific exercises included Tai Chi, basketball, badminton, dance, running, and cycling.

Conclusions:

  • Exercise interventions demonstrate positive effects in treating smartphone addiction.
  • Longer exercise durations appear to yield greater therapeutic benefits.
