The Thyroid Gland01:23

The Thyroid Gland

6.5K
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped gland located in the neck and covers the anterior surface of the trachea. The gland has two lateral lobes connected by a thin tissue mass called the isthmus. Internally, each lobe comprises many small spherical structures known as thyroid follicles, surrounded by a network of blood vessels.
The follicles have a central cavity lined by simple cuboidal to squamous epithelial cells called follicular cells. These cells produce the glycoprotein...

Area of Science:

  • Surgical Science
  • Surgical Risk Assessment
  • Anatomical Hazards

Context:

  • Surgical procedures, while life-saving, possess unique vulnerabilities.
  • Identifying critical anatomical structures is paramount in surgical planning.

Purpose:

  • To delineate the specific 'Achilles heel' for common surgical interventions.
  • To raise awareness of potential iatrogenic injuries in various surgical fields.

Summary:

  • Cholelithiasis surgery risks bile duct damage.
  • Varicose vein surgery risks femoral vein injury.
  • Colorectal surgery risks ureter damage.
  • Cardiac surgery risks ascending aorta damage.
  • Thyroid surgery risks recurrent laryngeal nerve damage.

Impact:

  • Enhances surgical safety through targeted risk awareness.
  • Informs surgical training and procedural development.
  • Contributes to reducing patient morbidity and mortality.
