Summary

Low vitamin C (ascorbic acid) levels are linked to a higher risk of acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG). This study found significantly lower plasma ascorbate in ANUG patients, suggesting a crucial role for vitamin C in preventing this gum disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between plasma ascorbate levels and ANUG.
  • To determine the relative risk of ANUG in individuals with low ascorbate concentrations.

  • A case-control study involving 60 ANUG patients and 60 matched controls.
  • Plasma ascorbate levels were measured using a modified 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine method.
