Non-typhi Salmonella enterica infection is a rare cause of pleural empyema. This case report details a Salmonella Typhimurium infection in an elderly female with recurrent pleural effusion.

  • A subsequent thoracocentesis identified Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium as the pathogen.

Findings:

  • The patient was diagnosed with a pleural empyema caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium.
  • This occurred in the context of pre-existing, recurrent pleural effusions secondary to congestive heart failure.
