Summary

High endothelial venules (HEV) appear in oral inflammation, not health. These specialized vessels resemble lymphoid HEV and may facilitate lymphocyte entry into chronic inflammatory lesions.

Area of Science:

  • Oral pathology
  • Immunology
  • Vascular biology

Background:

  • High endothelial venules (HEV) are critical for lymphocyte trafficking in secondary lymphoid organs.
  • Their presence and role in chronic oral inflammatory conditions are not well understood.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the occurrence and morphology of HEV-like vessels in various oral inflammatory conditions.
  • To compare gingival HEV-like vessels with those in lymphoid tissues.

Main Methods:

  • Histological examination of gingival tissues from healthy children and adults.
  • Analysis of tissues from children with chronic gingivitis, adults with experimental gingivitis, adult periodontitis, and periapical granulomas.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • HEV-like vessels were absent in healthy gingiva.
  • HEV-like vessels were detected in developing and chronic inflammatory lesions of the gingiva and in periapical granulomas.
  • The morphology of these oral HEV-like vessels was similar to lymphoid HEV.

Conclusions:

  • Gingival HEV-like vessels are associated with oral inflammation, not health.
  • These vessels may serve as key sites for lymphocyte homing into chronic oral inflammatory lesions.
  • Findings suggest a role for HEV in the pathogenesis of oral inflammatory diseases.
