This study introduces a smart metasurface system using artificial neural networks (ANNs) for real-time, non-cooperative human monitoring. It enables passive, privacy-preserving imaging and recognition via ubiquitous Wi-Fi signals.

Area of Science:

  • Applied Physics
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Electrical Engineering

Background:

  • Conventional remote monitoring systems require user cooperation or active devices, limiting real-world applications.
  • There is a growing demand for non-intrusive, passive monitoring solutions for daily life applications.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a novel system for simultaneous, real-time imaging and recognition of multiple non-cooperative individuals using radio-frequency signals.
  • To enable adaptive control of data flow and recognition tasks through an integrated artificial neural network (ANN) hierarchy.

Main Methods:

  • A smart metasurface imager and recognizer was developed, integrated with a network of three ANNs.
  • Microwave data was processed to generate full-body images, classify specific body parts (hand, chest), and recognize hand gestures at Wi-Fi frequencies.

  • The system was designed to operate passively, utilizing ambient Wi-Fi signals.
  • Main Results:

    • The system achieved instantaneous in situ full-scene imaging of multiple non-cooperative individuals.
    • Adaptive recognition of hand gestures and classification of designated body spots were successfully demonstrated.
    • The intelligent metasurface system proved effective even when passively excited by stray Wi-Fi signals.

    Conclusions:

    • The proposed intelligent metasurface strategy offers a new paradigm for privacy-preserving remote sensing.
    • This technology has potential applications in smart cities, smart homes, human-device interaction, and health monitoring.
