Each physiological condition has a particular set point, from body temperature to blood pressure to levels of certain nutrients. A set point is the physiological value around which the normal range fluctuates. A normal range is a restricted set of values that is optimally healthful and stable. Summary

Routine clinical parameters like waist circumference and alanine aminotransferase are reliable predictors of insulin resistance (IR). These markers, unlike VAI and AIP, can help estimate IR levels in individuals with metabolic syndrome (MS).

Background:

  • Current predictors like visceral adiposity index (VAI) and atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) may have limitations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate routine clinical parameters, including VAI and AIP, as predictors of IR.
  • To assess the predictive value of these parameters in individuals with and without MS.
  • To determine if VAI and AIP are applicable predictors for insulin resistance (IR) using homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR, HOMA-ß).

Main Methods:

  • The study included 188 individuals with MS and 188 matched controls without MS.
  • Insulin resistance was assessed using homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR, HOMA-ß).
  • Multivariate linear regression models were used to identify predictors of HOMA-IR and HOMA-ß.

Main Results:

  • Waist circumference (WC) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) showed the strongest correlations with HOMA-IR in both MS and control groups.
  • WC and ALT were significant predictors of HOMA-IR and HOMA-ß in multivariate analysis.
  • Neither VAI nor AIP were found to be significant predictors of IR.

Conclusions:

  • Waist circumference (WC) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) are reliable and widely applicable predictors of insulin resistance (IR).
  • These parameters can aid in estimating IR levels, particularly in the context of metabolic syndrome (MS).
  • VAI and AIP were not significant predictors in this study population.
