Summary

Transcranial photobiomodulation (t-PBM) using near-infrared light (NIR) significantly reduced anxiety symptoms in individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). This noninvasive treatment also improved sleep quality, showing promise as a new therapy for GAD.

Background:

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a prevalent mental health condition with limited treatment options.
  • Transcranial photobiomodulation (t-PBM) using near-infrared light (NIR) is an emerging noninvasive neuromodulation technique.
  • Preliminary studies suggest t-PBM may have anxiolytic effects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the anxiolytic efficacy of t-PBM with NIR in patients diagnosed with GAD.
  • To assess the impact of t-PBM on anxiety severity, overall clinical impression, and sleep quality.

Main Methods:

  • An 8-week open-label study involving 15 subjects with GAD.
  • Daily self-administration of t-PBM using an LED-cluster headband (830 nm NIR, 20 min/day).
  • Outcome measures included Hamilton Anxiety Scale (SIGH-A), Clinical Global Impressions-Severity (CGI-S), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores.

Main Results:

  • Significant reductions in SIGH-A scores (p < 0.001) and CGI-S scores (p < 0.001) were observed.
  • A large effect size (Cohen's d = 1.47 for SIGH-A, 2.04 for CGI-S) indicated substantial treatment impact.
  • Significant improvements in sleep quality as measured by the PSQI were also noted.

Conclusions:

  • t-PBM with NIR demonstrates potential as a safe and effective alternative treatment for GAD.
  • The treatment was well-tolerated, with no serious adverse events reported.
  • Further large-scale, randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trials are warranted to confirm these findings.
