Abstract:
A description is given of the developments since the 'Cultural Revolution' in 1949. The Association of Digestive Disease and Division of Endoscopy were organized in 1979, with more than 4000 members. Active centres have been established both in medicine and surgery, particularly in the university hospitals, with defined requirements for training programs.
