This report details an unusual case of type Va extrahepatic bile duct duplication in a 63-year-old woman. The condition, complicated by gallstones and bile duct stones, required surgical intervention.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Surgery
  • Congenital Anomalies of the Biliary System

Background:

  • Extrahepatic bile duct duplication is an extremely rare congenital anomaly.
  • Five types of this anomaly are recognized; this case presents a variant of type Va.

Observation:

  • A 63-year-old woman from Nepal presented with symptoms of chronic calculous cholecystitis and choledocholithiasis.
  • Diagnostic evaluation revealed an unusual variant of type Va extrahepatic bile duct duplication.

Findings:

  • The patient had a duplicated extrahepatic biliary system, specifically type Va.
  • Complications included choledocholithiasis (bile duct stones), cholangitis (bile duct inflammation), and chronic cholecystitis (gallbladder inflammation).
