Coarctation of the aorta, a rare adult diagnosis, was found in a young woman with hypertensive emergency. This aortic narrowing is a critical, often overlooked, cause of secondary hypertension.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Vascular Surgery
- Pediatric Cardiology
Background:
- Coarctation of the aorta is typically diagnosed in childhood.
- Adult presentations of undiagnosed coarctation are infrequent.
- Secondary hypertension can stem from various underlying conditions.
Observation:
- A young female presented with a hypertensive emergency.
- She was diagnosed with a stenotic bicuspid aortic valve necessitating surgery.
- A preoperative coronary angiogram revealed an undiagnosed coarctation of the aorta.
Findings:
- The patient had an undiagnosed coarctation of the aorta.
- Coarctation of the aorta is a significant cause of secondary hypertension.
- Bicuspid aortic valve disease was also present, requiring surgical intervention.
Implications:
- Highlights the importance of considering coarctation of the aorta in adult hypertensive emergencies.
- Underscores the need for thorough cardiovascular evaluation in patients with complex congenital heart disease.
- Suggests that coarctation of the aorta may be an under-recognized cause of secondary hypertension in adults.
