Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Pediatric Neurology

Background:

  • Intracerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are complex vascular lesions.
  • Pediatric AVMs are uncommon, necessitating specific clinical and management considerations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze the incidence, demographics, and clinical presentation of pediatric intracerebral AVMs.
  • To evaluate the outcomes of surgical versus conservative management for these lesions.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 39 pediatric patients (<16 years) with intracerebral AVMs.
  • Diagnostic assessment included angiography and computed tomography.
  • Surgical extirpation was performed when feasible; inoperable cases received conservative management.

Main Results:

  • The study reviewed 39 pediatric patients with unilateral (38) or bilateral (1) intracerebral AVMs.
  • Demonstrated the potential for AVM growth over time.
  • Surgical intervention showed promising results, supporting its efficacy.

Conclusions:

  • Total surgical excision is the treatment of choice for pediatric intracerebral AVMs.
  • A microsurgical approach is crucial for successful outcomes.
  • Conservative management is an option for inoperable cases, with ongoing follow-up.
