This study found higher levels of certain heavy metals and rare earth elements in the lungs of sarcoidosis patients. These findings suggest environmental exposure may trigger granulomatous inflammation in sarcoidosis.

  • Spearman correlation analysis was employed to examine associations between elemental levels.
  • Main Results:

    • Significantly elevated levels of calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co), cesium (Cs), europium (Eu), lutetium (Lu), thorium (Th), hafnium (Hf), gold (Au), and uranium (U) were found in sarcoidosis lungs compared to controls.
    • No significant differences in zinc (Zn), rubidium (Rb), and several other elements were observed.
    • Strong positive correlations were identified between several elements, including Fe-Cr, Eu-La, and Hf-Cr.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings support the hypothesis that sarcoidosis may result from an immune response to environmental heavy metals and rare earth elements.
    • Elevated calcium and iron levels might play a role in granuloma formation and separation from surrounding tissues.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the role of specific elements in sarcoidosis pathogenesis.
