Summary

Mitral valve prolapse patients may have abnormal heart function during exercise, unrelated to symptoms or prolapse severity. This exercise abnormality is age and sex-related, warranting caution in diagnosing coronary artery disease.

Background:

  • Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) can affect left ventricular (LV) function during exercise.
  • Abnormalities may occur even without coronary artery disease (CAD) or significant mitral regurgitation (MR).

  • To investigate exercise left ventricular function in patients with MVP.
  • To determine predictors of abnormal ejection fraction response to exercise in MVP.
  • To assess the relationship between MVP, exercise tolerance, and LV function.

  • Echocardiography to assess MVP severity.
  • Exercise testing to evaluate LV function (ejection fraction, wall motion).
