Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in adults with epilepsy

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is prevalent in adults with epilepsy (PWE). Routine screening for ADHD in PWE is recommended for early detection and management.

- A cross-sectional study involving 200 adult PWE recruited from a neurology clinic.
- Validated Persian versions of the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS v1.1) and Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination-Revised (ACE-R) were administered.
- Univariate and logistic regression analyses were performed.
Main Results:
- 35% of the total PWE group screened positive for ADHD.
- A significant association was found between cognitive function and ADHD screening: 18% with normal cognition, 42% with mild impairment, and 70% with severe impairment screened positive (p=0.0001).
- In PWE with normal cognition only, 18% screened positive for ADHD, with no significant association with other tested variables.
Conclusions:
- Approximately one-fifth of adults with epilepsy and normal cognitive function may screen positive for ADHD.
- Routine screening for ADHD in all PWE is advisable for timely diagnosis and management.
