Preventive dental advice for children is urgently needed. Simple guidance on avoiding sugary drinks before bed and twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste could reduce hospital admissions for preventable tooth decay.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Dentistry
- Public Health
- Preventive Medicine
Background:
- Dental caries is a leading cause of hospital admissions for children under 18 in England.
- Dental professionals require simplified caries risk assessment and preventive strategies for this demographic.
- High caries prevalence in socially deprived areas necessitates effective interventions.
Purpose of the Study:
- To propose a reappraisal of preventive dental advice for individuals under 18.
- To identify simple, acceptable preventive messages for patients and dental professionals.
- To reduce the incidence of caries and associated hospital admissions.
Main Methods:
- Review of current preventive advice and its effectiveness.
- Analysis of factors contributing to high caries prevalence in young people.
- Formulation of pragmatic, evidence-based recommendations for primary dental care.
Main Results:
- Extraction of carious teeth is the most common reason for hospital admission in under-18s.
- Current preventive advice may be insufficient or difficult to implement under time constraints.
- A combination of dietary modification and fluoride toothpaste use shows promise.
Conclusions:
- Urgent need for updated preventive dental advice in primary care for children.
- Simple advice on sugar-sweetened beverages before bed and supervised twice-daily fluoride toothpaste use (≥1000 ppm) is recommended.
- These measures may pragmatically reduce the burden of preventable dental caries and hospitalizations.
