Area of Science:

  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Surgical Training
  • Vascular Surgery

Background:

  • Effective in vitro training systems for manual vascular reconstruction are lacking for surgical trainees.
  • Developing an optimal system is crucial for improving surgical skills and patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To introduce and evaluate an innovative in vitro training and testing system for manual vascular reconstruction.
  • To assess the efficacy and safety of a magnetic anchoring technique for surgical simulation.

Main Methods:

  • Development of a vascular reconstruction training machine with magnetic tractors and a magnetic suture puller.
  • Performance of end-to-end vein anastomosis using porcine iliac veins.
  • Evaluation of potential suture damage using light microscopy and breaking strength tests across control, manual, and magnetic puller groups.

Main Results:

  • Successful end-to-end anastomosis of porcine iliac veins was achieved using the developed system.
  • Light microscopy showed minimal damage to sutures, with no significant difference between manual and magnetic pulling.
  • Breaking strength tests revealed no significant differences across suture groups, indicating safety.

Conclusions:

  • The magnetic anchoring system provides a viable in vitro platform for individual vascular reconstruction practice.
  • The system effectively simulates manual vascular reconstruction and allows for quality assessment.
  • This tool can enhance surgical training by offering a safe and reproducible practice environment.
