MR Imaging of the Hypermobile Lateral Meniscus of the Knee: A Case Report
1Department of Diagnostic Radiology, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, Singapore. kunjukrisnan.renukanair@mohh.com.sg.
Objective:
The hypermobile lateral meniscus of the knee is a rarely described entity. In this case report we aim to draw attention to the clinical presentation and MR imaging findings of this pathology.
Case Report:
We review the clinical and imaging findings that led to the diagnosis of hypermobile lateral meniscus with transient subluxation causing intermittent locking, and which subsequently led to successful surgical treatment.
Conclusion:
Hypermobile lateral meniscus is rarely diagnosed prospectively on MR imaging. A better understanding of this uncommon condition will lead to prompt diagnosis and effective treatment, with a better outcome for the patient.
Insights
Hypermobile lateral meniscus, a rare knee condition, can cause intermittent locking. Prompt diagnosis via MR imaging is crucial for effective surgical treatment and improved patient outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Radiology
- Knee Anatomy
Background:
- The lateral meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage in the knee joint.
- Meniscal hypermobility is an uncommon condition causing knee instability.
- Transient subluxation of the lateral meniscus can lead to intermittent locking symptoms.
Observation:
- This case report details a patient presenting with intermittent knee locking.
- Clinical examination and MR imaging were used for diagnosis.
- The findings indicated a hypermobile lateral meniscus with transient subluxation.
Findings:
- Hypermobile lateral meniscus is rarely diagnosed prospectively using MR imaging.
- The condition can present with symptoms mimicking other meniscal pathologies.
- Successful surgical intervention was achieved after accurate diagnosis.
Implications:
- Increased awareness of hypermobile lateral meniscus is needed for prompt diagnosis.
- Improved understanding of MR imaging findings can aid early detection.
- Timely diagnosis and treatment can lead to better patient outcomes and knee function.
