Summary

Background:

Hemangiosarcoma is a malignant vascular tumor that can occur in various species.
Abdominal hemangiosarcomas, particularly those outside the liver and spleen, are infrequently reported in ferrets.
Early detection and diagnosis are crucial for managing neoplastic conditions in small mammals.

Observation:

A 6-year-old female ferret exhibited anorexia and decreased activity before death.
Necropsy revealed a dark red abdominal mass with significant intraperitoneal hemorrhage.
Histopathology showed proliferating spindle to polygonal cells with irregular vascular spaces and tissue infiltration.

Findings:

Immunohistochemistry confirmed tumor cells strongly positive for CD31.

Factor VIII-related antigen was localized to dilated blood vessel-like structures within the tumor.

The tumor was diagnosed as an abdominal hemangiosarcoma, rare in ferrets when excluding liver and spleen involvement.

Implications:

This case underscores the importance of considering rare tumor types in ferrets presenting with non-specific clinical signs.
Accurate histopathological and immunohistochemical evaluation is essential for diagnosing vascular tumors.
Further research into the etiology and treatment of ferret hemangiosarcoma may improve outcomes for affected animals.
