  • The Rotterdam Study cohort (n=1650) was analyzed, with data collected between June 2013 and January 2017.
  • Diet quality was assessed using food frequency questionnaires and adherence to Dutch dietary guidelines.
  • Chronic axonal polyneuropathy was diagnosed via questionnaires, neurological exams, and nerve conduction studies, with statistical adjustments for multiple confounders.

Main Results:

  • No significant association was found between overall diet quality and chronic axonal polyneuropathy (OR=0.99, 95% CI 0.88-1.12).
  • Diet quality was also not associated with sural sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitude in participants without polyneuropathy.
  • A nominally significant inverse association was observed between salt intake ≤6 g/day and chronic axonal polyneuropathy (OR=0.55, 95% CI 0.35-0.86), though this did not survive multiple testing.

Conclusions:

  • This study found no overall association between diet quality and chronic axonal polyneuropathy.
  • Lower salt intake may potentially be associated with a reduced risk of chronic axonal polyneuropathy, warranting further investigation.
