Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

10.3K
Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Suctioning the Nasopharyngeal Airway01:29

Suctioning the Nasopharyngeal Airway

2.6K
Nasopharyngeal suctioning is a procedure to remove secretions from the upper part of the respiratory tract that the patient cannot clear independently. It helps maintain airway patency and prevents complications such as aspiration pneumonia.

Suctioning the Oropharyngeal Airway01:25

Suctioning the Oropharyngeal Airway

706
In preparing for oropharyngeal airway suctioning, a nurse must gather all necessary equipment, including a suction unit with tubing, a prepackaged suction kit, sterile gloves, water or saline for irrigation, a water-soluble lubricant, and additional personal protective equipment (such as a gown, mask, and goggles) to control infections.
After assembling the equipment, the nurse should practice hand hygiene and don appropriate PPE according to infection control guidelines to avoid the...

Endoscopic Procedures IV: Sigmoidoscopy and Laproscopy

474
Sigmoidoscopy and laparoscopy are distinct medical procedures that enable physicians to internally inspect different parts of the GI tract. Although they serve different purposes, each is essential for diagnosing and, in some cases, treating various medical conditions.
Sigmoidoscopy
Sigmoidoscopy is a diagnostic procedure that uses a flexible sigmoidoscope equipped with a light source and camera to examine the rectum and sigmoid colon. The procedure involves inserting the tube through the anus...

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Surgical Procedures
  • Day Care Surgery

Background:

  • Tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy is a common otolaryngologic procedure.
  • Traditionally performed as an inpatient procedure, its day care feasibility requires evaluation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the safety and efficacy of day care tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy.
  • To present a 15-year experience with this surgical approach.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 1207 day care tonsillectomies with or without adenoidectomies performed between 2002 and 2016.
  • Patients were observed for 6-8 hours postoperatively before discharge.

Main Results:

  • Overall readmission rate was 0.778% (8/1027 patients), with 3 due to bleeding and 5 due to pain.
  • Postoperative bleeding required exploration in 2 patients; one secondary hemorrhage was managed conservatively.
  • No patients required blood transfusion.

Conclusions:

  • Day care tonsillectomy with or without adenoidectomy is a safe procedure for carefully selected patients.
  • This approach is also cost-effective, offering a viable alternative to inpatient procedures.
