Background:

Schools offer opportunities for physical activity (PA) but children's engagement patterns and locations are under-researched.
Limited studies use mixed-methods to combine objective PA tracking with children's perspectives.
Understanding daily PA locations beyond school is crucial for comprehensive health strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate children's physical activity (PA) behaviors across various locations.
To explore differences in PA patterns based on age (Key Stage 2 vs. Key Stage 3) and gender.
To identify factors influencing children's PA through a mixed-methods approach.

Main Methods:

Sixty children (aged 9-13) wore GPS and heart rate monitors for four days.
A subsample (n=32) participated in focus groups to discuss PA.
Children also completed PA diaries to complement objective data.

Main Results:

Key Stage 2 children spent more time outdoors than Key Stage 3.
Boys engaged in more light physical activity (LPA) than girls, particularly when walking and at school.
Key Stage 3 children participated in more moderate physical activity (MPA) at school compared to Key Stage 2.

Conclusions:

Children's PA patterns and perceptions vary significantly by age and gender.
Enjoyment, social factors (friends, family), and environmental elements influence PA.
Future research and health policies should adopt multi-method approaches and consider demographic variations in children's PA.
