Problem-based learning (PBL) effectively enhances community-based rehabilitation (CBR) education by integrating real-world cases. This approach equips students with critical thinking and practical skills for successful CBR practice.
Area of Science:
- Rehabilitation Education
- Pedagogical Strategies
- Higher Education
Background:
- Community-based rehabilitation (CBR) program success hinges on personnel quality and integrated learning.
- Problem-based learning (PBL) is a pedagogical strategy that uses real-world situations to develop knowledge and problem-solving skills.
Purpose of the Study:
- To develop and test a framework and PBL protocol for teaching community-based rehabilitation (CBR) in higher education.
Main Methods:
- A literature review informed the framework and PBL protocol development.
- PBL was implemented in three CBR courses, utilizing self-directed learning and e-portfolios.
- Efficacy was evaluated via case studies, focus groups, questionnaires, and e-portfolio analysis.
Main Results:
- 133 students participated in three CBR courses using the PBL protocol.
- PBL was perceived as effective, realistic, and practical for developing critical thinking in CBR.
- Student engagement and CBR competence were enhanced through context-related materials and real cases.
Conclusions:
- The developed PBL protocol equips students with active learning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills essential for CBR success.

Specialized Care Centers and Settings-II
Rural health centers are specialized care facilities in remote locations with very few medical personnel. The primary care providers who run the centers are mostly Registered Nurse Practitioners. Here, emergency treatment is provided to critically ill or injured patients before they are transferred to the closest hospital. Fortunately, due to advancement in technology, many rural healthcare facilities and professionals have easy access to diagnostic and treatment...
Cognitive Learning
E. C. Tolman's theory of purposive behavior emphasizes that much behavior is goal-directed. He argued that to understand behavior, we must look at the entire sequence of actions leading to a goal. For instance, high school students study hard, not just due to past reinforcement but also to achieve the goal of getting into a good college.
Tolman introduced the idea that behavior is influenced by...
