Epistaxis01:30

Epistaxis

477
Epistaxis, or nosebleeds, occurs when small, swollen blood vessels in the nasal mucous membrane rupture. Typically, the anterior septum is the primary site of occurrence.
Etiology
Possible causes of this condition include high blood pressure, trauma, low humidity, upper respiratory tract infections, allergies, foreign bodies, nasal inhalation of corticosteroids or illicit drugs, excessive use of decongestant nasal sprays, facial or nasal surgery, anatomic malformation, tumors, or systemic...

Cranial Bones: Lateral View01:27

Cranial Bones: Lateral View

4.3K
The lateral view of the cranium is dominated by temporal, sphenoid, and ethmoid bones.
The temporal bone forms the lower lateral side of the skull. The temporal bone is subdivided into several regions. The flattened upper portion is the squamous portion of the temporal bone. Below this area and projecting anteriorly is the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, which forms the posterior portion of the zygomatic arch. Posteriorly is the mastoid portion of the temporal bone. Projecting...

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment01:28

Angle Closure Glaucoma: Treatment

1.1K
Angle-closure glaucoma, or closed-angle glaucoma, is an eye condition where the iris bulges out and blocks the iridocorneal angle, resulting in a buildup of aqueous humor and increased intraocular pressure. Immediate medical attention is necessary due to the sudden onset of symptoms. The treatment for angle-closure glaucoma includes short-term and long-term approaches. Short-term treatment involves using eye drops like pilocarpine to lower intraocular pressure by increasing aqueous humor...

Chronic Pharyngitis01:23

Chronic Pharyngitis

10.3K
Chronic pharyngitis refers to persistent inflammation of the pharyngial mucosa.
Etiology
It often arises from persistent viral or bacterial infections affecting sinuses and tonsils.
Additional contributing factors include inadequate dental hygiene, mouth breathing, recurring tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis, laryngopharyngeal reflux, and exposure to smoke, chemicals, and other environmental pollutants. Allergic reactions to pollen, mold, and pet dander, chronic cough, excessive voice usage,...

Glaucoma: Overview01:25

Glaucoma: Overview

1.2K
Glaucoma is an eye condition characterized by increased intraocular pressure that damages the retina and optic nerve, leading to irreversible blindness if left untreated. The human eye has various components, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and optic nerve. Aqueous humor is secreted by the epithelium of the ciliary body in the posterior chamber and flows through the trabecular meshwork and canal of Schlemm, maintaining normal intraocular pressure. The trabecular meshwork and the canal...

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Ophthalmology
  • Pediatric Infectious Diseases

Background:

  • Orbital infection is a known complication of ethmoiditis.
  • Recurrent periorbital cellulitis is an exceptionally rare complication of rhinosinusitis.

Observation:

  • A 4-year-old child presented with six episodes of unilateral periorbital cellulitis and one subperiosteal orbital abscess since 3 months of age.
  • Anatomical abnormalities like uncinate process variations or mucoceles can predispose to this condition by obstructing sinus drainage.

Findings:

  • Diagnosis was guided by computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.
  • Initial treatment involved antibiotics, corticosteroids, and decongestants, with surgical intervention reserved for non-responsive cases or recurrent complications.

Implications:

  • Surgical treatment resulted in complete resolution and no recurrence in the presented pediatric case.
  • This case highlights the importance of considering surgical options for refractory or recurrent orbital complications of rhinosinusitis in children.
