Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the correlation between prenatal ultrasonography (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for micrognathia assessment.
  • To determine if US alone is sufficient for reliable screening of Robin sequence (RS).
  • To establish a diagnostic threshold for RS using the inferior facial angle (IFA) on prenatal US.

  • Retrospective case-control study (2002-2017) of fetuses with prenatal US and MRI.

  • Moderate correlation between US and MRI IFA measurements (ICC=0.729); US IFA threshold of 45.5° yielded 84% sensitivity and 81% specificity for RS.

Conclusions:

  • Prenatal US measurement of the inferior facial angle (IFA) is a reliable screening tool for Robin sequence (RS).
  • An IFA threshold of 45.5° on US can effectively identify fetuses at risk for RS.
  • Recommend incorporating IFA into routine prenatal US and using MRI for confirmation when IFA is below the threshold.
