A new digit-based contrast sensitivity function (CSF) test matches traditional grating tests but is more efficient. This digit CSF test offers a compatible and faster assessment for visual function evaluation.

Area of Science:

  • Vision science
  • Ophthalmology
  • Psychophysics

Background:

  • The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) is traditionally measured using grating stimuli.
  • A novel digit-based stimulus set has been developed to enhance the efficiency of CSF testing, particularly for individuals unfamiliar with the Latin alphabet.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the equivalence of CSFs estimated using a digit-based test compared to a traditional grating-based test.
  • To determine if the digit-based stimulus offers improved efficiency in CSF assessment.

Main Methods:

  • CSFs were measured in young and older participants using both a 2-alternative forced choice (2AFC) grating orientation identification task and a 10-digit identification task.
  • The CSFs derived from both tasks were statistically compared to assess agreement and efficiency.

Main Results:

  • CSFs estimated from the digit and grating tests showed strong agreement after controlling for stimulus type and performance levels (RMSE: 0.093 ± 0.029 for young, 0.131 ± 0.016 for older observers).
  • The digit CSF test required fewer trials/less time to achieve the same standard deviation compared to the grating test for both age groups.
  • A model incorporating digit similarity and sensory noise accurately explained behavioral responses in the digit identification task.

Conclusions:

  • The digit-based CSF test provides a highly compatible assessment of contrast sensitivity compared to the traditional grating test.
  • The digit CSF test demonstrates significantly greater efficiency, requiring less time and fewer trials for accurate measurement.
