Summary

Electrical stimulation using the Accelerated Recovery Performance trainer (ARP) significantly improved thigh circumference gains after anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. This ARP protocol aids in reversing quadriceps muscle atrophy, outperforming standard isometric rehabilitation alone.

Background:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction often leads to quadriceps femoris muscle atrophy and delayed functional recovery.
  • Standard rehabilitation protocols may not fully address disuse atrophy post-ACL surgery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of the Accelerated Recovery Performance (ARP) trainer protocol, utilizing direct current electrical stimulation, on thigh circumference recovery following ACL reconstruction.
  • To compare the effects of ARP-augmented isometric rehabilitation versus isometric rehabilitation alone.

Main Methods:

  • Twenty-five patients undergoing isolated ACL reconstruction were randomly assigned to an experimental group (isometric rehabilitation + ARP trainer) or a control group (isometric rehabilitation alone).
  • Both groups underwent sixteen rehabilitation sessions over two months.
  • Thigh circumference was measured at four standardized points above the patella.

Main Results:

  • The experimental group (ARP trainer) demonstrated approximately three times greater gains in thigh circumference compared to the control group.
  • The ARP trainer protocol showed superiority over isometric rehabilitation alone in improving thigh girth.

Conclusions:

  • The Accelerated Recovery Performance trainer protocol is a promising adjunct for post-ACL reconstruction rehabilitation.
  • Consideration of the ARP trainer protocol is recommended to mitigate ipsilateral quadriceps femoris muscle atrophy and enhance recovery.
