Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the incidence and characteristics of lung cancer in patients aged 40 or younger at a tertiary cancer center in Lima, Peru.
  • To evaluate the clinic-pathological features of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) in this young population.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of lung cancer patients diagnosed between 2009 and 2017 at the Instituto Nacional de Enfermedades Neoplasicas (INEN).
  • Data collected from clinical files included epidemiologic and clinic-pathological information.
  • Statistical analysis performed using SPSS software.

Main Results:

  • Out of 3823 lung cancer patients, 166 (4.3%) were 40 years or younger.
  • The majority (82.5%) of young patients had NSCLC, with a median age of 36 years.
  • Common symptoms included cough, chest pain, and dyspnea. Adenocarcinoma was the predominant type (63.3%), with 84.7% diagnosed at advanced stages. Median overall survival was 8.2 months.
  • A smoking history was present in only 14.4% of patients, and 59.1% were female.

Conclusions:

  • The proportion of young lung cancer patients in this Peruvian cohort is higher than reported in international literature.
  • Lung cancer in young individuals is often sporadic, more prevalent in women, typically adenocarcinoma, and diagnosed at advanced stages, leading to poor survival.
  • These findings suggest lung cancer in the young may differ significantly from that in older populations.
