Area of Science:

  • Neonatal Medicine
  • Vascular Surgery
  • Pediatric Cardiology

Background:

  • Umbilical artery catheterization is a common neonatal procedure.
  • A rare complication includes aortic thrombosis.
  • Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for favorable outcomes.

Observation:

  • A neonate presented with complete thrombosis of the abdominal aorta.
  • The condition occurred subsequent to umbilical artery catheterization.
  • Clinical presentation suggested impaired lower limb perfusion.

Findings:

  • Diagnostic imaging confirmed extensive aortic thrombosis.
  • Intravenous infusion of streptokinase was initiated.
  • Successful recanalization of the abdominal aorta was achieved.

Implications:

  • Streptokinase can be an effective treatment for neonatal aortic thrombosis.
  • This case highlights the importance of vigilant monitoring post-catheterization.
  • Further research into optimal anticoagulation strategies in neonates is warranted.
