Background:

  • Verbal learning and memory deficits are common in people with multiple sclerosis (pwMS).
  • These deficits are often linked to impairments in other cognitive functions, including information processing speed and executive functioning (EF).

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of executive functioning (EF) on verbal learning and memory in pwMS.
  • To examine these effects at both behavioral and neural levels using neuropsychological tests and MRI.

Main Methods:

  • Seventy pwMS completed a battery of neuropsychological tests assessing verbal memory (Selective Reminding Test) and EF (Stroop, Verbal Fluency, Modified Five-Point Test).
  • Structural MRI scans were obtained for 68 patients to calculate cortical thickness in frontal, pre-frontal, and hippocampal regions.

Main Results:

  • Performance on the Alternate Verbal Fluency test significantly predicted immediate and delayed verbal memory scores.
  • Cortical thickness in the hippocampus and several frontal regions (anterior cingulate, superior/inferior frontal gyrus, medial frontal cortex, frontal pole) correlated significantly with verbal memory performance.

Conclusions:

  • Executive functioning plays a significant role in verbal memory performance in pwMS.
  • Understanding the interplay between EF and verbal memory is crucial for developing targeted memory rehabilitation programs for pwMS.
