Palliative Care

Background:

Palliative care addresses holistic distress in life-limiting illnesses.
Israel established the palliative care advanced practice nurse role in 2009 to meet rising demand.
Full implementation of this role remains a challenge despite investment.

Purpose of the Study:

To describe the development of the palliative care advanced practice registered nurse role in Israel.
To establish a foundation for developing advanced practice registered nurse roles in other specialties.
To identify challenges and inform future implementation strategies.

Main Methods:

Qualitative descriptive study utilizing document analysis (n=11) and key informant interviews (n=11).
Thematic analysis of extracted themes.
Data triangulation across multiple data sets.

Main Results:

Documents indicated increasing palliative care needs and standardized training requirements.
Interviews revealed low awareness of palliative care, a need for defined roles and practice authority, and barriers to training.
Identified challenges include role definition, practice authority, and training accessibility.

Conclusions:

Ongoing needs in palliative care and advanced practice nursing in Israel.
Challenges in implementing the palliative care advanced practice nurse role offer insights for other specialties and countries.
Streamlining training and clarifying scope of practice are crucial for successful advanced practice nursing role implementation.
