Summary

A recurrent retroperitoneal liposarcoma caused abdominal pain and kidney dysfunction in a 66-year-old woman. SPECT/CT imaging successfully localized the tumor and assessed kidney function, aiding in diagnosis.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Radiology
  • Nuclear Medicine

Background:

  • Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare malignancy often presenting as a large abdominal mass.
  • Recurrence after resection can lead to significant complications, including organ displacement and functional impairment.

Observation:

  • A 66-year-old woman with a history of retroperitoneal liposarcoma presented with abdominal pain.
  • Initial ultrasonography showed a large abdominal mass causing renal displacement.
  • Dynamic renal scintigraphy indicated severe right kidney dysfunction and abnormal tracer uptake.

Findings:

  • SPECT/CT imaging precisely localized both kidneys.
  • The recurrence of retroperitoneal liposarcoma was accurately detected.
  • Combined imaging modalities facilitated comprehensive assessment of tumor recurrence and renal function.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the utility of SPECT/CT in diagnosing recurrent retroperitoneal liposarcoma.
  • Accurate localization and functional assessment are crucial for effective patient management.
  • Advanced imaging techniques improve the detection and characterization of complex abdominal masses.
