Background:

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common condition affecting aging men.
Understanding the evolution of BPH research is crucial for future advancements.
Bibliometric analysis provides a quantitative overview of academic contributions.

Purpose of the Study:

To characterize the academic landscape of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) research.
To identify trends and future directions in BPH studies using bibliometric analysis.
To analyze the most impactful BPH literature based on citation count.

Main Methods:

A bibliometric analysis was conducted on leading BPH articles.
The Web of Science Core Collection was utilized for data retrieval.
The 100 most-cited BPH articles published up to 2018 were analyzed for citations, journals, authors, publication year, and country.

Main Results:

The top 100 BPH articles were published between 1978 and 2012, with the 1990s being the most productive decade.
Research focus shifted from BPH etiology/pathogenesis in older articles to treatment in newer ones.
The United States dominated contributions, followed by Italy and Canada, with The Journal of Urology being the most frequently cited journal.

Conclusions:

This study is the first bibliometric analysis of leading BPH articles.
The evolution of BPH research indicates a potential shift in funding towards treatment.
These findings offer insights to guide future research priorities for benign prostatic hyperplasia.
