Area of Science:

  • Hematology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Clinical Pathology

Background:

  • Leukergy, the agglomeration of white blood cells, is observed in various inflammatory conditions.
  • Its potential role in assessing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) activity requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the phenomenon of leukergy in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
  • To correlate leukergy levels with IBD disease activity and other clinical markers.

Main Methods:

  • Observational study assessing leukergy in IBD patients.
  • Comparison of leukergy percentages with clinical, endoscopic, and laboratory findings (WBC, ESR).

Main Results:

  • A significant correlation was found between leukergy percentage and IBD disease severity.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Leukergy paralleled clinical and endoscopic assessments of IBD activity.
  • Leukergy demonstrated higher accuracy than WBC and ESR in assessing disease course, even when masked by medications.
  • Conclusions:

    • Leukergy is a sensitive indicator of IBD activity and progression.
    • It serves as a valuable, cost-effective, and easily performable bedside test for IBD management.
    • Leukergy offers a reliable alternative for monitoring IBD patients, especially when other markers are obscured.
