Summary

Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) can arrest external root resorption (ERR) in immature necrotic teeth. This study shows REPs successfully halted ERR in four cases, preventing ankylosis and decoronation.

Area of Science:

  • Endodontics
  • Regenerative Endodontics
  • Dental Traumatology

Background:

  • Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) aim to treat immature necrotic teeth with apical periodontitis.
  • REPs are not typically indicated for external root resorption (ERR).
  • This study explores REPs' potential in managing ERR.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the use of REPs in arresting external root resorption (ERR).

Main Methods:

  • Four cases (5 teeth) of immature necrotic teeth with apical periodontitis and ERR were treated with REPs.
  • Plasma-rich fibrin was used as a scaffold in the regenerative procedures.
  • Teeth were followed for up to 3 years post-treatment.

Main Results:

  • Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) successfully arrested external root resorption (ERR) in all treated teeth.
  • Replacement resorption was halted in three cases, preventing ankylosis.
  • The need for decoronation was avoided in these cases.

Conclusions:

  • Regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) demonstrate potential in arresting external root resorption (ERR).
  • REPs offer additional benefits beyond root maturation and infection control.
  • Further clinical trials are warranted to confirm REPs' efficacy in managing ERR.
