Summary

Granulomatous lens-induced uveitis was diagnosed in a barred owl. This condition results from a traumatized lens and should be considered in avian patients with ocular trauma.

Background:

  • Lens-induced uveitis is a significant concern in avian ophthalmology.
  • Traumatic lens luxation can precipitate severe intraocular inflammation.

Observation:

  • A mature male barred owl presented with a large white intraocular mass.
  • Differential diagnoses included granuloma, neoplasia, foreign body, and inflammation.

Findings:

  • Histologic examination confirmed a granulomatous inflammatory reaction.
  • The reaction was caused by a posteriorly luxated and traumatized lens.

Implications:

  • Lens-induced uveitis is a critical differential diagnosis in birds with ocular trauma.
  • Prompt recognition and management are essential for avian eye health.
