Summary

This study found that adding silica dioxide colloidal solutions (SDCS) to scaling and root planing (SRP) significantly reduced bacteria in chronic periodontitis patients. SDCS gel is recommended as an adjunctive therapy for managing periodontitis.

Area of Science:

  • Periodontology
  • Microbiology
  • Biomaterials Science

Background:

  • Chronic periodontitis affects a significant portion of the adult population.
  • Supportive periodontal therapy (SPT), including scaling and root planing (SRP), is the standard of care.
  • Novel therapeutic adjuncts are needed to improve treatment outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the efficacy of SRP alone versus SRP combined with silica dioxide colloidal solutions (SDCS) in treating chronic periodontitis.
  • To evaluate the impact of SDCS on microbial load and clinical parameters.

Main Methods:

  • A split-mouth design study involving 20 adult patients (35-55 years) with chronic periodontitis.
  • Two non-adjacent sites per patient were treated with either SRP alone or SRP with SDCS.
  • Clinical pocket depth (PD) and microbial analysis (MA) were assessed at baseline and day 15.

Main Results:

  • Local delivery of SiO2 via SDCS gel resulted in a statistically significant reduction in total bacteria, Tannerella forsythia, and Treponema denticola.
  • The combination therapy demonstrated enhanced microbial reduction compared to SRP alone.

Conclusions:

  • Silica dioxide colloidal solutions (SDCS) act as an effective adjuvant therapy when used with scaling and root planing (SRP).
  • SDCS gel is recommended for the management of moderate to severe chronic periodontitis to improve microbial control.
