The Awards for Distinguished Scientific Applications of Psychology are presented to persons who, in the opinion of the Committee on Scientific Awards, have made distinguished theoretical or empirical advances leading to the understanding or amelioration of important practical problems. James S. Jackson is a recipient of the 2019 award "for his dedication to research on mental health, aging, and stress. With brilliant theory and empirical research, James S. Jackson documented the influences of race and culture on the mental and physical health of African Americans. His insights into the obesity epidemic that has particularly affected African American women offered an integration of strengths and vulnerabilities of disadvantaged groups."
